Stuck in a moment

The clock on the wall stood still. Furious drops of rain replaced the pendulum’s slow and dull ticking as if they would impose time to rush toward its end.

He woke up anxious to know where he was. He would later regret that he had forced the dream to vanish so quickly and be replaced by the normal, usual surrounding. There it was: the order of things... were all of them in their right places? Let's see: clumsy painted walls, the other bed, the table in between, the book, the notebook, all his pens, the petrol lamp, the black, dirty ceiling above it, the spider net in the corner opposite to his bed, with its five flies caught in it, the Persian rug with its same colours and same complex geometry, with the same stains and the same cat sleeping on it, the same blue slippers lying by the edge of the bed, on the floor, the same stack of clothes to be donated (without any further delays!!) to the homeless shelter from the third building on the left, the new door which was already broken- he should have gotten it way cheaper, both of the four squared windows, half covered by the same white curtains, his same painting on the wall: quarter of an apple and four birds in a cage. As far as he knew, nothing was missing.
His eyes circled the room again, just to be sure, but all things seemed to shape in perfectly; the concept of Home became clear and all its blurry elements were now decisively carved into the background. His mind stopped inquiring and accepted to rest - it knew that place; it was safe and comfortable. Let there be light!

These 2 seconds were the same every day, so tonight, he will again feel like today was the first and only day he had ever woken up, making the next morning feel like yesterday was the first and only time he had ever gone to sleep. Over the years, his life had made him very very tired...
